Twente – Marseille, is it that time again?

By: Magnusson | February 26th, 2009

I don’t want to sound overly pessimistic but for the last few years we’ve always been eliminated too early from European competitions by a team that’s “supposed” to be less glorious than we were. I can’t explain it but if we get Newcastle or some bigger club, I’m optimistic. But make that club obscure and I’m pretty sure we’ll get kicked out. Twente came prepared last time, museling all of our players and obviously did their homework. We, on the other end, didn’t. Our team seemed surprised that Twente, a team that hasn’t lost in their last thirteen games, was going to be a worthy opponent.
Anyway, after losing at home last week, we need to return the favor this afternoon. We will have to bring it to them today and I honestly don’t see that happening.

I’m going to be overly pessimistic and say that we won’t win this one. I’ve re-watched the first game AND the Le Mans game this morning and honestly I don’t see how we could have tried more. It’s just that maybe we lack the quality to go any firther or maybe the player’s hearts are not in it. maybe it’s a little of both, but we basically just need another team tonight.
One of the good news is that Lorik Cana will be fit to play tonight. And that’s it for the good news.
Julien Rodriguez probably won’t play since he hurt himself again, so is Ronald Zubar. Our defense will consist of Renato Civelli and Vittorino Hilton. I am a firm believer in Civelli but he hasn’t played much this season and still hasn’t had a stellar game with us. Tonight could be his night.
Bonnart will take his spot back from Tyrone Mears who showed great promise and motivation in his first game with the club last week. Karim Ziani will play and thus Valbuena won’t. Ben Arfa needs to be starting this at all costs as he lost his spot on the rotation but since Marseille will be trying to showcase him on a European stage to get a better deal whenever they want to be selling the kid, I don’t see him not starting.
The shocker might be that Mamadou Samassa will be starting and Koné won’t. Even though I believe Koné is a much better player, we will need some height on our side (Twente has 6 starters who are over 6′3″) if we want to threaten them on set pieces.
Here is what ou tem might look like:
Mandanda – Bonnart, Civelli, Hilton, Taiwo – Cana (cap.) – Ben Arfa, Ziani, Be. Cheyrou, Niang – Samassa.

This one will be hard, but not impossible.

il est nous qui n’est pas glorieux. nous devrions cesser de coller notre tête dans nos culs et commencer à jouer au football. Nous sommes ainsi merde que nous devrions avoir honte pour être Marseille.

I’m so excited that Ben Arfa is starting. I really don’t understand why people are so hard on him. A lot of players have not been playing well– but he is the only one being targeted for criticism! He needs to improve mentally— but how does criticism help that?

Marco - I apologize for this, I didn’t mean to insult your club in any way. I just meant they were not as known as Ajax among dutch teams.

Jason - Please stick to English.

Sarah - The problem with Ben Arfa is not his game, it’s his antics. A coach can’t let him do what he wants because it wouldn’t be faitr to the other players. Bt he’s above most players and after his game tonight, maybe he’ll be back on the rotation.

Magnusson: I just don’t think he acts up that much– people just bring up the same incidents over and over again. He has a strong personality– but I think you need one to be successful at a young age. Even in the clairefontaine documentary I don’t think he acts up that much (I though Abu was the aggressor in that one fight)

I am so glad you guys made it through. Three French clubs in the Round of 16 – and it could have been four, Bordeaux were so close.

Even though I said I didn’t care about the UEFA Cup anymore and wanted OM to focus on the championnat, this win today and moving on to the Round of 16 has re-ignited my interest.

I wish I would have caught the match, but I’m stuck in California until I return to Marseille on 1-September this year.

WOW!!! I hope OM prepares well for Ajax!!! I don’t want to miss THAT match! :)

Sarah - I know he doesn’t act up as much but the fact that he’s acting like a spoiled brat while other kids his age are well over it and playing well, better thazn him is disturbing. to have such talent go to waste is why so many peoaple hate him. That and his apparent unwimllingness to klistzen to anyone he deems to be an inferior football player.

Inara – Thanks Inara, you guuys showed the way this week. And I’m so disgusted for Bordeaux. I was believing in the 4/4. But maybe that’s what is going to help the Ligue 1 go forward. if Bordeaux and Lyon are in top shape and focused, the season will potentially be interesting til the end.

    Justin -
    May your wishes come true.
