The Vélodrome is already boiling…
By: Magnusson | September 18th, 2007
In two hours our 2007/2008 Champions League campaign starts. Marseille has been showing a united front i the last four days. Albert Emon has not been adressing his future and both José Anigo and Pape Diouf have been denying the reports that this will be Coach Emon’s last match at the helm of our squad no matter what. We hope not but if Marseille loses at home or doesn’t show any spirit, Albert’s run will be coming to an end rather quickly. Lorik Cana assured us that his guys will show a very different display tonight. We’re tired of the declarations, we want actions now. We’re not happy seeing players playing for themeselves as Mamadou Niang confirmed last sunday on RMC. On french Television channel Canal+, possibly the next coach Didier Deschamps weighed in and said that the main responsible for Marseille’s lack of results are the players, adding that many players on this team do not deserve to be wearing the jersey and that he believes that if the plyers were fighting hard enough, the fans could forgive them anything.
But enough with the threats on the players lives, we’ve seen worse and Marseille seems to forget that when Drogba was here, we did go to the final of the UEFA Cup but we were saved from relegation at the 36th round. So let’s be reallistic and support. There’s no need for the fans to be booing the players like they have been at the end of the Toulouse game.
The only thing that reassures me is the fact that there will be 15.000 survolted turkish fans tonight and our fans will be too busy trying to vocally surpass them to be booing the players. For the first time in a long time, Marseille will be playing away in the Vélodrome. Here are the lineups:
Mandanda – Bonnart, Rodriguez, Faty, Taiwo – Cana, Nasri, Ziani, Niang, Cissé, Zenden
One thing’s for sure, the lineup is very offensive-minded. Let’s talk more after the game.

Best of luck for tonight. I hope both Olympiques make it.
At least you guys start at the Velodrome. It might not as reassuring as it was before, but it’s still better than playing in Turkey, where the fans are insane.
Good to see only one central midfielder in the lineup with the other two attacking. Hopefully your defense will be up to the test.

Good result for Marseille, they top their group at the moment. Next up is Porto, who are much harder to play against than Besiktas. It’s an away match, so it will be tough. But maybe this win will give the team confidence.
Also, why was the velo so empty? I was surprised.

For a team that has played so poorly in Ligue 1 they looked pretty solid tonight.

The Vélodrome was empty for two reasons. Marseille sold a Champions LEague pack for 200 euros if you were a normal client and for 45 euros if you were a yearly season ticket holder. BUt the fans were so aggravated against the team that they didn’t want to show up. Only the die-hards were there tonight. Most people watched it on Tv

Yes he did. He played one of his better games of the season. He got out early but he was at the origin of thefirst goaland was a real poison in the midfield. I really though he wouldn’t play that well because of the Ramadan that started on thursday but he did and I’m very pleased with his performance. The real breakthrough was clearly karim Ziani though. He made everyone remember why he was so expensive this summer.
