Lucho Gonzalez, it’s Official…

By: Magnusson | June 30th, 2009

We’ve been hearing about it for three weeks now but now it has been confirmed by the club’s internet website a few minutes ago. Marseille just concluded the highest transfer in its history by paying 18 million euros plus many bonuses every time we qualify for the Champions League to Porto for their now ex-Captain. The man nicknamed El Commandante will be joining his teammates in Evian once he passes the traditional medical visit sometime this week and is subsequently presented to the press.
This is the first official signing of the Dassier era, which we’ll be talking a little more about in a few days. Welcome to Lucho Gonzalez, who is an excellent player who was linked with Marseille back when Jean Fernandez was already our coach.
If Lucho passes the visit, he’ll be signing for four years and will be numerically replacing Modeste M’bami.

the argentine international may be folowed very closey by Souleymane Diawara, who seems to be closer to Marseille than ever before.

Expensive I would say. He better be as good as people describe him to be.

I heard Hamburg bid 5 million for Cana? Shouldn’t Marseille be asking at least 10-12 million for him? If M’Bia can cost 12 Cana should too.

Top quality player who should make a difference to the team. It is a little pricey but it is what you have to pay for quality players nowadays.

How good is Cana? On the surface he seems just what Arsenal needs but I haven’t seen enough of him…

I doubt that Cana would leave Marseille for Hamburg– He would probably only leave for a bigger club or at least one of the English clubs. I also think 5M is a little under priced…..

Also, any word on where Valbuena is going?? Was he at the first day of training? I know he said he was going to leave after speaking to Deschamps, but I haven’t seen any news on him in a while?

Valbuena said he will stay and fight for his place. So it’s still not clear if he will stay or leave.

Wolfsburg have bid 10 million for Ziani! Do we really need him?

    Don’t listen to rumors. Hamburg have been entertaining Cana for a long time and Deschamps may have not liked him back then but he apparently talked to him before he left to tezll him he needed him next year. Just imagine a Gonzalez Cana Cheyrou midfield. Jeez;
Anyway, to shpow you his commitment to the club, Cana who was supposed to come in next monday was already there on monday with all the players and cut his vacation short to know evryone and behave like a real captain.
So we’ll see, but supporters wouldn’t accept him leaving for 5 million, especially for a player i consider inferior in terms of consistency.
    We’ll have to see

I seem to remember a quote from Pape Diouf sometime around January saying that if teams are interested in Cana, the price would be 20+ million. Which makes it sound like the club was looking for 15-18 million. Certainly the new regime doesn’t value Cana so much less that they would sell for 5 million.

Magnusson: do you know how much money OM have left to spend. I read they had 40mill or something when the window began.

Well it’s tricky. The budget was set aty something around that mark. But that was before the Champions League spot was secured, before Djibril Cisse, Gael Givet, Zubar and Ziani sales. And that was also before the 46 million of TV revenue came in. So with Luchop Gonzalez bought at 18 million, Diaara at around 6-8, Cissé (Edouard) coming in for free, it must be 40 million left. I think enough to get M’bia, and a top-tier striker, without forgetting salary reevaluations for Niang and some other key players.
I’ll look into it and give you a better answer.

So now we’ve sold Ziani. Not the greatest player ever, but a firm favourite with the fans. I can see a serious backlash starting now.
