Hunting Season open…
By: Magnusson | December 16th, 2008
The only thing we can get out of the snoozefest that was this Sunday’s game is that France now has a championship that it can be proud of. With three heavyweights (Marseille, Bordeaux and Paris) in three big markets and a solid fourth (Rennes), the Ligue 1 is becoming interesting again and this has not been the case for quite some time now. People have even started calling it the Big FOUR as in the premiership. Now we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves since Lyon is still on top but it has to be a first in years that the Rhodanians played like they did this weekend. It was completely mesmerizing to see them play to get a draw on their own pitch while Marseille, even if we didn’t get out there guns blazin’ like we did last year (we missed Mamadou sorely on Sunday, he of the four goals against Lyon last season), we tried to win but couldn’t in those conditions. Puel’s guys were frightened and we were not. Even players like Juninho were inexistent, and if it were not for his replacement Ederson, Lyon would have lost for sure. Anyway, this game shows that teams are not frightened by the Ogre anymore. Rennes won gainst Lyon, so did Paris and Nantes. Never had they seemed so vulnerable and this will continue to be the case as long as they will be in the Champions League.
Anyway, one the signs that this Marseille Lyon artificial rivalry is getting out of control for the worst is the banner that the Bad Gones went up and posted. The Banner reads “Pape Diouf, tes initiales te vont si bien” (Pape Diouf, your initials fit you so well). Thing is in French, PD stands for pédé, which is short for “pédéraste” and used as “fagg*t” would be in English. Now let’s hope the Ligue that is so quick to react when it’s paris or Marseille will do something about it.

If I can just be Devil’s Advocate for a moment M - I just assumed this was all part of the immature sense of humour of some French Ultras fans. I consider myself an honorary English OM Ultra, and in the Boulevard Michelet shop for at least the last 3 seasons we have been able to buy merchandise stating “PSG = Paedo, Sado, Gay”. Is this a can of worms we really want to open up?

Not really but the fact of the matter is, Everyone gets fined and suspended. Marseille get fines up to 45.000 euros everytime ONE of our fans lights up a fumi. What I want is fairness. Marseille fans got fined a LOT four seasons ago for insulting Laurent Perpere, then PSG president. But we’re doing a lot to clean up our stands and so is Paris, Bastia and Nice and all the places known for rowdy fans. Why would Lyon fans get a pass just because etheir team is winning and they get some feeling of entitlement. All I want is for them to say it was wrong for their fans to write that and move on. Marseille took the high road because we don’t want to feel like we’re crybabies but still.
Anyway, it doesn’t really matter anymore.Posted from

Wow today’s match was great, even under those frozen conditions.
Without a full strength attack, Marseille still manages to score twice. Nice.
Merci beaucoup Steve Mandanda for that beautiful save!
