Erik Gerets leaving Marseille…

By: Magnusson | April 28th, 2009

It’s been creeping on us for a little while now. The last time our owner, SpongeBOb (Robert Louis-Dreyfus), came out in the press he came out with guns blazing saying he would fire Gerets if Marseille didnt win the Championship. Gerets took it exceptionnally hard and apparently refused to negociate ccording to the local press.
Now this morning, l’Equipe revealed that Gerets was in contact with the Saudi club of Al Hilal Riyad who proposed the Belgian technician with a reported 9 million deal on three years. For someone who always said that Marseille was the second to last of his commitments before going back to Belgium and taking over the National Team, this sounds like it maks sense as Marseille was only willing to give him 200.000 euros a month before taxes.
That added to the fact that Gerets never styed more than two seasons anywhere, it seems like we’re going to be witnessing his last three games in Marseille. Every man has his price but as far as I’m concerned, the star is the club, not the Manager.
I’ll say more when I know more.

    Sad news indeed.
Lets just hope they dont recruit Sven-Goran Eriksson, because if I recall right he was considered just before moving to mexico, am I right? Anyway I dont think it would have been a good idea.

He helped stabilize the club. Before him there was like a different manager each season. Drefus is a terrible owner. How about Papin for new manager. I dont think Dechamps would come because the club wont be able to match his ambitions.

Oh man, that’s very not good news. I’m glad to have Blanc for another season, but any idea where Gerets might be heading next?

    (I’m pretty sure they won’t take Sven…)

@qnp: Sven is way too expensive for Ligue 1. He was never realistically considered. It’s one of the names Dreyfus likes to toss around, like Mourinho but then he ends up not wanting to dish out the money. Not Happening.

@Sportboy: Papin would be a terribl coach. He failed at Lens and is not very popular these days in Marseille as he’s had a few words stating his preference for Bordeaux in the title race. So people wouldn’t be behind him at first. Plus he handles his communicaion extremely poorly.
Deschamps is the obvious choice and everyone should be able to find an agrement. But Deschamps’ ego gets in the way. He wanted a lot of people fired there which is why he’s still clubless as we speak and since he’s lost the France job race to Laurent Blanc now that Blanc is in minds, he’ll have to get a club next season or just forget about it.

@Jennifer: Saudi Arabia seems to be the destination. But the worst thing about ll his is that it seems Marseille were the ones to not have offered something quickly enough. i’ll read a few interviews Gerets has given and we’ll see.

I wouldn’t be too sad on losing Gerets. He has done a great job with this team and hopefully will be rewarded with a title.

For Marseille to progress further recruitment needs to be improved. At the end of the season I have a feeling that lot of players will leave. Hence, it will be very important to choose a good manager who will build a good team. we need a coach that will stay for 2-3 years and develop a very good team. something Blanc has done at Bordeaux and Le Guen did at Lyon.

    Meanwhile Allez Marseille!

Why do you call him SpongeBob? This is terrible news, however, as Cana said, we must make hay whilst the sun shines and win the league this year, before M Gerets, M Diouf and an assortment of players leave.
