The “Drogbathon” is in full effect…
By: Magnusson | July 12th, 2008
A group of incredibly commited supporters (led by the 24 year-old Mathieu Gomila aka “Kain34″) decided to see if the marseillais fans across the world could virtually pay Chelsea to bring back Didier Drogba to the Vélodrome and maybe make sure the Marseille staff and the superstar aware of their initiative.
The price set by the Blues is of 28 million € and the idea seemed ridiculous since the first ones were all asked to not go further than 2 € each. The operation started on July 3rd was quickly gaining popularity when La Provence made an article about it. After that, extremely popular newspapers like la Gazzetta Dello Sport and The Daily Mail reported the information, causing the initial website to crash in a day. The fans subsequently changed the address and hosts. To make sure the sum donated is credible, you can only donate once with each IP address and the maximum sum donated must be of 200 €. the goal is to know how much would be given if they had the power to bring him back.
As we speak, promises have exceeded 800.000€ in less than a week. We have yet to hear from Didier himself but the man who always vowed to come back to Marseille must be very pleased and touched by such a display of affection. Now there’s ONE man who could easily foot the bill and make EVERYONE happy, and that man is our billionaire owner. He could do it. We should find a way to convince the guy!

This is exactly why I love Marseille. All the fans are so committed and crazy!

that is crazy..i was thinking ..HOW??? with 2 euros each…you would need at at least 10 million or so Marseille fans to contribute…but then I thought…wait a min..you never know…some crazy guy can just pay half a mill or so…and then there you may go…but they had to increase it from the 2 euro limit…200 seems much more reasonable.. now you are talking reasonable nos…even if everyone does not spend 200…Marseille is looking for upto 200-300 k folks contributing…which is not at all unreasonable… This is why I love football…people can do so much…inspire so much!

If 200 or 300 thousand people give money, we’ll be able to buy him. How awsesome would that be.
But can you imagine the kind of pressure there would be on the guy. Knowing that 300.000 people paid their hard earned money just to get you back to the club. Wow that would be a first i think.Posted from

I think Drog would be able to take it…but it would be something he would rather not dump again! I know I wouldn’t …its funny when the fans do it straight then it really affects everyone…if you think about it, it is the fans who are paying for everything anyways!

I think it’s pretty cool what the fans are doing. It might be more practical if the president can pay like, half or something. I’d love to see what Drogba actually thinks of it. I bet he’ll be touched, and feel a bit weird at the same time. I would be a bit angry if the player that I raised a lot of money for disappoints..

I promised to pay a 100, and if it is to really happen, I’ll pay much more. But let’s be realistic, even though Drogba announced several times his desire to return to OM, he is right now at top of his game… The most prestigious clubs in Europe want him… Not that OM is not, ’cause we are, but the Ligue 1 isn’t!!

First of all - welcome back M - we’re lost in the UK without you.
Secondly, and I hate to say this, but Drogba has shown at Chelsea that his temperament is second only to Cisse’s on a bad day - do we really want another stroppy striker at the Velo?
I’d prefer to look forward, watch Niang grow, and get a younger striker, sans ego, to back him up.Correct me if I’m wrong!

Banjo, Drogba is pretty much the most popular Marseille striker of this millenium. His ego is big (Ive seen it first hand covering the African Cup of Nations and following the Cote D’ivoire team) nbut he’s a boss. The other truth is that no other player has been this in phase with the public. He was the spitting image of the city and that’s why people still love him.
Kids buy new kits and put Drogba on the back. If he ever came back, that would be an incredible signal to all Europe.
I’m only dreaming but I wish it could happen.
As for Niang, as a senegalese myself, I love the kid. He’s gonna do great things this season I hope. BUt he’s already 28, so he won’t stay much longer to grow. I’d love to see some other kid get out of the academy like Krstic and be ill but we’ll have to wait and see.
Oh and by the way, you can’t deny that since Gerets came, Cissé has been a lot less moody on the pitch or with his teammates. I think he could become once again an incredible assett to this club
He’s scored 3 goals in 4 friendlies, that’s somethingPosted from

OK you persuaded me - I take your point about Gerets and what he has done last season with Cisse.
I have now pledged my Euros!!!Posted from
