Taye Taïwo, African left-back of the year…
By: Magnusson | February 9th, 2009
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced its 2008 African Team of the Year.
Our left-back, Taye Taiwo, has the great honor to be a part of it. In this team of the African continent, he shares the limelight, among others, with a former Marseillais, Joseph Yobo, who is now playng for Everton.
The team is made according to the votes of the 54 national managers registered with CAF and it is the second consecutive year that Taiwo was included in this selection. He also received the African young player of the year in 2006.
The eleven players will receive a crystal trophy at a ceremony in Lagos (Nigeria) next Tuesday.
Here is the 2008 African Team of the year:
Carlos Kameni – Joseph Yobo, Gomoa Woeller, John Mensah, Taye Taiwo – Yaya Toure, Mohamed Aboutrika, Michael Essien, Muntari Sulleyman – Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Adebayor

Well deserved. I love Taiwo. I was so glad he didn’t go anywhere in the transfer window.

Great. I’m surprised Mensah made the list though.

Well there’s a reason why Mensah went to lyon. He has had an incredible 06/07 season and didn’t leave Rennes only because they promised him they wouldn’t stay in his way to go to the ACN. He’s had an amazing ACN and an even better 07/08 season. This year, he just has problems ftting at Lyon because of all the injuries and because Puel is not a big fan. But he’s going to get there. Like Makoun.

The rumors abound that Taiwo is looking north to play in the EPL or La Liga, where I’m sure he’d be paid more and have some great opportunities to compete and start.
That being said, I hope OM wins the championnat and ponies up the money to try to keep him, because not only is he a force to be reckoned with on the left side, but he’s an excellent free-kick shooter, and a GREAT TACKLER! Just recently, he saved us a 1-0 win from what could have been a goal and a 1-1 draw!
I hope that SpongeBob and Diouf and Gerets and all the OM supporters can find a way to keep Taiwo. He would not be easily replaced.
