Marseille 2-1 Ajax, An unconvincing victory…

By: Magnusson | March 13th, 2009

Despite winning against a young and inexperienced Ajax team, Olympique de Marseille doesn’t seem to have done what was asked of them. As we played for the most part of the game against a 10-man team, we would have liked to see at least one more goal.

When we get back to the Arena next week, all they’ll have to do is win 1-0 at home and we could be eliminated. I don’t want to sound overly pessimistic but I seemed to me that as soon as we scored the second goal, all of our player’s minds shifted to our weekend confrontation against Paris Saint-Germain. We conceded the away goal that is keeping hope alive on the dutch side.

First let’s focus on the positive. Our main reason to be happy is that we can win at the Vélodrome again. This statement might seem strange but we’ve been unable to do so in the past few weeks. Don’t forget that if we didn’t draw Le Mans and Valenciennes [and thus losing four points], we would be ahead of Lyon as we speak.

Second good news is that Mamadou Niang has finally scored again. Our Senegalese superstar who has been mute ever since coming back from his foot-injury (he broke his foot in December) showed a lot of promise and scored an otherworldly type of goal, A Rabah Madjer-esque goal.

The other great surprise is that Renato Civelli, who is living some kind of a rebirth as we speak, held another one of those very solid defensive games. Marseille is the best defense in France right now, having conceded 0 goals in five games and Civelli is no stranger to this. The Argentian who has been fighting for a spot on the team for over a year seems to have immensely improved inn a year. We could have used him at some points earlier in the season.

Now with he bad news. First we lost Laurent Bonnart to a groin injury. the diminutive right-back will be out for at least two months and may be replaced by either Ronald Zubar or Tyrone Mears.

The news doesn’t seem too reassuring for captain Lorik Cana either as our Albanian fighter left his teammates at half -time and nothing has been said yet as to what might be wrong with him these days.

And at the end of the match, a very sad and worrying thing happened as Mamadou Niang rushed the stands to exchange a few words with supporters who were booing him the whole game, despite his great showing and the fact that he was just coming back from injury.
He even threw the armband (he received it when Cana left the pitch) on the floor, which forced Eric Gerets to immediately pick it up and ask his staff to go and try calm the player.

Here are the goals from last night:

It seems like nothing is going to go right this season. I don’t know why Niang is getting a hard time, he’s only just back from injury and needs a chance to get back into the game. Maybe he just got booed because he’s made it clear he might not be hanging around the Velo much longer. He’s not getting any younger and clearly wants to play in the Premiership while he still can. I think alot is riding on this weekend. If we can beat PSG we should get a psychological advantage and Lyon are having their most erratic season for several years. Plus they should still be suffering after getting whacked by Barca. Now if we could just hold the team together and had bought a decent striker…

People were booing Mamadou Niang all night?? That sucks. He’s my favorite player, and rumored to be leaving after the season. I hope he stays, but if this player-fan antagonism heats up, I don’t know.

I was wearing my Niang shirt all day looking for a sports bar in SF that would show the match. Sadly, none of them carried it, so I went to a cafe and the beach and imagined OM beating Ajax.

Then I went home, saw the videos, and saw that beautiful goal by Niang. Wow!!!

Don’t despair, Magnusson. The next match still needs to be played. And the way OM has been doing well on the road, I think their chances might actually be pretty good of continuing on in the UEFA Cup.

I do hear you though. After the second goal, all thoughts were on PSG…

So let me get this straight. We are up 1 in goal difference but are tied? What does that mean? The 2-1 victory doesn’t mean anything?

What happens if we have a 0-0 or 1-1 draw in Amsterdam? PK’s? Or does that GD from the first game count?

I’m a bit confused why all the press spinning this as “Ajax preserves tie”. How is 2-1 a tie? Would 2-0 or 3-1 be a win then?

They preserved the tie because Ajax got an away goal…That means if they score one at home (and we don’t score at all), they automatically go through on the away goal rule. Basically, it is not unreasonable to assume that Ajax might come out of this round as a the winner…

The game last night against PSG was brilliant! Although I’m bummed that Ben Arfa didn’t play….he’s just amazing…

Cana should have been sent off with a red card after elbowing Ajax midfielder Lindgren into the hospital. By comparison, the yellow cards that Van der Wiel got were total B.S.

Ajax will win 2-0 in the ArenA and adieu l’OM!

    Thanks for the clarification, Sarah.

On the flipside, if Marseille gets an away goal, the whole “away goal” thing is tied and goes away, right?

What if the score is 0-0? Marseille wins?

If Ajax wants to play boring Italian-style defense and send everyone back to defend and Marseille is going up against an 8-man wall, the game might end scoreless.

    What happens then?

I realize the fear is a Ajax 1-0 Marseille situation where the away goal would break the tie and that Ajax would advance. I’m just asking why it’s a tie now? It’s not a tie.

Marseille 2-1 Ajax is a tie? I thought the away goal only came into play as a tie-breaker, but maybe I’m just confused (which is entirely possible).

I hope OM defends well. Allez l’OM!!! :)

Justin C– A cup “tie” is merely a way of describing that two teams are scheduled to play two fixtures against each other (home and away). In this context, it does not mean a score-tie (draw).

    Scenarios

Marseille win at Ajax by any goal margin –> Marseille wins the tie, succeeds to the next round

Marseille 1-1 Ajax —> Marseille wins the tie, succeeds to the next round

Ajax wins by any goal margin –> Ajax wins the tie, succeeds to the next round

Marseille 0–0 Ajax –> Marseille wins the tie, succeeds to the next round

I just really want Ben Arfa to play– he is so entertaining. Plus, he doesn’t hit the deck as often as Valbuena….I feel like every 10 minutes he is on the floor.

Kone is awesome though!! He is just so tenacious

Sarah, as usual, thank you for the clarifications.

I hope to see Ben Arfa play too, but as a substitute. Don’t forget to high-five Valbuena for that goal against Liverpool, AT ANFIELD, during the previous Champions League season. THAT was a thing of beauty. I re-watch that goal on YouTube and Dailymotion and make sure to send it to all my LFC friends and family via e-mail and Facebook :)

Ben Arfa is exciting, and is the future of OM and the French National Team (as is Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema), BUT Valbuena is solid now, and we can’t forget that he has proven results and is a natural at scoring in high-pressure situations, like against Liverpool, at Anfield :D

    ALLEZ L’OM!!! :)

    BEAT NANTES!!! :D

    OM 2-0 Nantes.

I am very very happy right now. (FR: Je suis très très heureux maintenant.)

I know Nantes is not the powerhouse from their championship days, but it was nice to see us beat them like it was business as usual, or a glorified practice session.

Passing was crisp, from defense to midfield to the attackers.

Props to Brandao and Civelli for the goals, but what a fine job by Valbuena and Zenden for controlling the ball the way they both did.

Another thing to notice. Look at our record with Mamadou Niang in the lineup, and without Niang. Him being out with the broken foot earlier this year really cost us. We could be dominating the Ligue this year had it not been for multiple injuries and multiple players out of action during the November/December/Janurary spell.

Now that the team is looking pretty healthy, and that our principal attaquant is back on his feet (pun intended), we’re looking good.

We have to stick it to Lille and Lorient and Nancy the next time we see them, and make sure we can handle business against Lyon and our UEFA Cup opponents.

MARSEILLE is on the road to the championnat, but we have to win one game at a time and focus only on the next match. I agree 100% with Cheyrou’s comments to his teammates.

Let’s keep this ball rolling :)

ALLEZ L’OM!!! AUX ARMES!!! NOUS SOMMES LES MARSEILLAIS!!! :) :) :)

How ironic that I call out Valbuena for diving as a reason why Ben Arfa should play….and the very next game Hatem makes one of the worst dives I have ever seen (when the Ajax player elbowed him). Ridiculous…but I still love to watch him….

Well done Marseille for taking the top spot in the league. It offers us the possibility of a thrilling game for the top spot when Lyon and Marseille will meet… if Lyon manages to go past the Bordeaux and PSG hurdle.

A grand finale Lyon/Marseille can only be good for the championship. Let’s hope there won’t be any possible discussions on the refereeing in the coming games. I want it to be clear, fair and square whatever the outcome.

At least we are at home for this second leg (considering our first game)…we just cant let them get any away goals. If we do, its over!

Also, I heard Gerets got PISSED at Modeste M’Bami for injuring Hilton…apparently he started screaming that Modeste always goes in too hard on guys, and is lucky to have not sent multiple players to the hospital. How often do we hear of fights happening at OM because of defenders going in too hard (Ben Arfa with both Cisse and Ziani). They need to be A LOT more careful– particularly at this point in the season and going in on players who are prone to injury (both Hilton and Ben Arfa).
