Didier Drogba flies to the rescue of Djibril Cissé…

By: Magnusson | October 30th, 2007

12-06-2007-didier-drogba.jpgIt’s a secret for nobody that Djibril Cissé is not having the best time of his life right now. The best paid player in the Ligue1 has only scored twice and given three assists in ten games as a starter. When you compare those with his french National Team colleague Karim Benzema, those numbers seem more than bismal. To add fuel to the fire, Djibril has started being booed again by the supporters in the Vélodrome and even his coach wants to make sure he doesn’t start games just to spare him mentally.
While the wildest rumors are circulating about his eventual departure this winter (which would make the month-long negociation between marseille and Liverpool this summer a moot point), ex-Marseille (and future ex-Chelsea) idol Didier Drogba decided to come to the defense of one of his favorite players out there. Yeah i know, I didn’t understand it either but apparently strikers have some kind of solidarity, a little like goalkeepers.
Didier Drogba, talking to RMC and exlaining why he wouldn’t get the Ballon d’or this december (to me he’s the best player in the world, hands down) and his situation at Chelsea right now, took the time to talk in favor of the gold-moustache sporting Arles native:

“People tend to forget that Djibril has had two career-ending injuries. The image I keep of him is that he has a very strong mental ability. He is one of those players able to come out of the shadows and step into the limelight because of his mental abilities. He’s a very special player and the marseillais should keep rooting for him, they should even show him more love now because he is someone who may be strong mentally, but you can feel that he functions better when he feels loved. He’s in the club of his life. He has played for Liverpool and Auxerre but has said long before coming here that marseille was the club he wanted to be playing for and that it would be a dream come true for him. Now all he needs is a little help. He may not have been scoring a lot lately but he’s been decisive in giving many assists, and that is very important as well.”

Didier is nice and all but he should call Djibril and tell him the only thing that bothers a lot of his teammates is how he can be acting so dumb sometimes and shouting at them all the time. The prima-donna thing could have worked if he was dishing out Benzema-like numbers but if Pauleta can outscore your whole season in nine minutes, piping down would be a much better idea.
On a more serious note, I agree with Didier and I said earlier that i don’t believe one second all these late rumors claiming that Cissé will leave this winter. Marseille won’t let a player they paid more than 8 million for this summer leave six months later. That would be a very dumb move as they couldn’t get any money from that sale. Let’s just see how this Marseille - Metz thing works out for him.
If he comes out and scores thre goals, everything will be forgotten for the match against Lorient. Same thing happened last year and three consecutive great performances put him back in the hearts of the fans.

Drogba speak the truth and so do you. Seems that the booing is pretty counterproductive. don’t know if the injuries are an excuse for poor production but godamn, people do forget how bad those two breaks were. i like djibril because he makes up for what he lacks in technical ability by just pure speed and athleticism (i’m talking in his best shape of course). he still needs to learn when its better to chip the ball rather than blast it but man i’ve seen him blast some nice ones in his time. i hope he gets back in top shape at some point. if chelsea won the champions league drogba would take ballon d’or easy. it’s just they didn’t get anything last year, and it was his best yet. there’s always the next one i guess. AC Milan time you think? I kind of struggle to see him in that shirt but what do i know.

Yeah the booing doesn’t produce any real result. Last night, he scored a goal and made the penalty that actually qualified us for the next round and finished the game in his underwear with the fans shouting his name.
I mean, does a man really need to tell you his wife just lost a baby for them to give him some slack. I mean come on, he’s harmless.
