Der neue König von Bayern…

By: Magnusson | December 4th, 2007

news_manset_resim_16386_ribery004.jpg Little Francky Ribery has gone a long way. NOt even six months after having left us this summer, Kiki has been killing them out thetre in Germany. We’ve seen the videos, we know they love him. He’s on his way to become the most beloved “Französisch” ever. Well maybe not ever but in a long time. Franck Ribery has more charisma than the entire Bundesliga and apparently our neighbors are loving the kid. So much so that Nike has decided to make sure everybody knows who Francky is rolling with. In the land of Adidas that has historically been the Bayern, few players wear other brands. Ribery is a swoosh-guy and they made him wear regal-blue and kiwi-colored shoes to look like Ludwig II. The poster says “Bayern has found one King” The picture is great and makes us miss the days of Joga Ribery. Of course Adidas counterattacked with an ad featuring the legendary and eternal Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer, just to let the new kids at Nike who owns this part of town. That Nike/Adidas battle was very interesting in Germany and Adidas kept the mannschaft in the end. Now The Beaverton company eyes les Bleus, we’ll see how it’s handled in France.

Here are a few pictures of the huge billboard. After the EA Sports 08 campaign, Ribery is once again all over the place.

EDIT: Jan from the Bundesliga Offside wrote about this litterally three and a half months ago in a WAY more complete manner than I did. Check out the story again.

That was indeed a very clever marketing coup by Nike.

You know, that is a cool poster, and it works because Ribery is…well, he’s not pretty by any means. So he kind of looks like those barbarian kings in those cheesy B movie adverts.

Inara: The poster is actually closely modelled after an actual portrait of Bavaria’s most prominent king:

Magnusson: no worries! This is worth reporting twice. I’m sure there are a lot of Marseille Offside readers who don’t check the Bundesliga Offside.

That’s true actually. I must have missed Jan’s post on it because this is the first place I saw it.
