Whats Missing?
By: Richard | October 9th, 2009
Hi readers just wanted to get some input from you guys. With this embarrassing week nothing but a memory now, does anyone think this team is missing something vital? I’ve been critical of the attack and I was thinking to myself, besides Niang who on this team can step up and score the goals we need? Looking back at the past transfer market two names come into mind that got away – Klass Jan Huntelaar and Jeremy Menez. In all likely hood there was a good chance that we could have landed either of those guys. Who knows what position we would be in with a little extra attack. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to discredit Morientes or Kone they are both talented in their own right but they just aren’t producing. Lets face it our attack really isn’t that deep, I’ve grown tried waiting for Brando to break through as a scorer. But this is just my opinion we need a boost in our attack but I honestly don’t know where its going to come from. So let me hear your opinions guys. Whats the problem with this squad and how would you go about fixing it?

First fixing needs to be on the back line. They are leaving huge holes that lead to breakaways and easy passes for the opponents. Out of all the goals that L’OM has allowed this year, I would say that a good 65% of them were preventable.
Second, they need to push up the play. People need to get involved up front. How many times do you see Niang up front and he has to make the play all by himself. Sometimes it leads to a beautiful goal, but many times it leads to poor attack. It almost seems like sometimes they are running at 4-5-1!
Finally, they need to play as a team. This is the difference between Lyon and Marseille. Both teams have a lot of different faces. Yet Lyon has been able to click. Even with Lisandro out, they still win and haven’t lost a beat.
On the other hand, Marseille just go up and down. While Niang has looked great, that is about with, with the exception of HBA sometimes. I’m wondering if they are still getting adjusted with Lucho in the midfield after starting the season without him. If they are, that is a poor excuse. The should click by now.
Again, when I team doesn’t click, I blame coaching. Sorry DD!

overall, OM needs to play better as a team. I believe others have mentioned this before. The individual talents on the field are good enough to face off with any opponent, as long as they play as a team. I hope this clicking happens sooner than later.
Niang and Cheyrou have been the most consistent of the players in my opinion. Heinze had a great start to the season, but there have been flashes of brilliance mixed with game-costing errors. I’m not sold on Ben Arfa (sorry, Sarah) and he’s probably best starting from the bench and coming in as a last-minute sub.
Also: Fabrice Abriel, how come he plays so well against us last season and after we transfer him he doesn’t hold up to that standard?
I’ve noticed a lot of missed opportunities, loss of possession because of some boneheaded attempts at passing (basically giving the ball away). OM are much better than how they’ve been playing.
Lucho, is he the answer?
Anyways, all is not lost. We can still make a good run for the league, and it would feel good to beat AC Milan.
Allez L’OM!! qui ne saute pas n’est pas Marseillais–ais!!

Play as a team. Get stability. We know that all.
Hopefully people at the club are saying these things and working hard on implementing it.
Since 2003-04 season (when I started following OM) I have never experienced something I would call stability. Each season there is a new manager, new team and same problems. I just hope DD stays for good 3 season.

I agree Aditya! This team is like a revolving door at times. many of my favorite players have left and just when i get some new favorites off they go! Thats why its refreshing to see players like Niang, Cheyrou, and Mandana pledge some loyalty to the team.

Totally off topic, but I just saw the commercial for FIFA 10 on ESPN2 here in the states, and I was surprised to see a very familiar face make a couple appearances starting at the 1:07 mark.

If you don’t want to take the time to look, it’s Mandanda.

Thanks for posting that Danny believe it or not I’m an avid PES fan. I played Fifa and was not impressed with the representation of Marseille. I plan on doing a little review of the teams portrayal in PES once I get my hands on it.
