These devils wear Adidas…
By: Magnusson | August 1st, 2007
Marseille has new uniforms and I like them for once. The home jersey is just the Adidas #1 template that teams such as Chelsea’s new away kits, Liverpool, Milan, Saint-Etienne’s away and the L.A.Galaxy among others will be using this season. It’s classic marseille but we’re done with all the crosses and other distracting items on the jersey itself. It’s simple and effective. I’m looking forward to wearing it. The away jersey is the worst we’ve had in years. The stripes just don’t do it for me and I’ve never signed on to be an F.C. Porto supporter but apparently this will appeal tremendously to the argentinian fans that seem to fill the Vélodrome every game and maybe it will boost Renato Civelli’s skills and motivation by making him believe he’s been called up by the albicelestis.
The third jersey, the one we’ll be wearing when we lift Hexagoal for the first time, is the most exciting jersey we’ve had in years. First of all it is clearly an hommage to the South Winners (SW87) supporter group that will be celebrating their 20th anniversary this season and that adopted these colors (orange and sky) in reaction to the PSG skinheads of the “Kop de Boulogne” fans that were wearing Bombers at the time. They used to wear the same bombers but decided to turn them inside out during games. They also pretty much immediatly chose Che Guevara as their icon. The new jerseys are pretty slick and daring. I enjoy them very much and hopefully they’ll help us go as far as we can this season.
Speaking of jerseys, the new lineup and incidently the new uniform numbers were announced today officially and it seems Karim Ziani took the #6 that has been worn by such great olympians like Marcel Desailly and more recently Brahim Hemdani (I am well aware that the terms “Brahim Hemdani” and “Great” should never be juxtaposed ever again, but I like that guy) while Bolo Zenden took Abedi Pelé’s #10. Abedi’s seed André Ayew chose the same number as Mistah George Weah during his brief stint for us, #29. Ribery’s #7 jersey was taken by Benoit Cheyrou while Gaël Givet didn’t see much competition for his beloved #32. Jacques Faty takes Cantareil’s #5 while Laurent Bonnart is #24. The Marseille native Salim Arrache left Jean Tigana’s #14 he was wearing last year after Sabri lamouchi left for the number every player from the city wants to be wearing, the number 13 (Marseille is in the Bouches du Rhône department, dpt#13), that was the other Marseille product Toifilou Maoulida’s property until not too long ago. Steve mandanda and Vincent Gragnic will respectively be #30 and #18. My namesakes Leyti Ndiaye and Mame Ndiaye will be sporting #14 and #25 while the rest of the kids from the Youth teams had to pick the leftovers. Hassoun camara (#20), Anthony Marin (#31), Thing Kouang Lao (#26), senegalese phenom Pape Mbow (#27) and Sébastien Maté (#40) shouldn’t be showing theirs if everything goes right this season. The most puzzling is still that Fabrice Fiorèse has been given #12 while it just seems impossible for me to imagine him playing for us in the future. The rest of the players will naturally keep their numbers and Habib Beye will still be Captain.

Fiorèse is definitely the strangest thing. As for the Europe kit, I just think the orange is too light. It looks almost pink in some pictures. For it to capture the SW spirit, it needs to be orange like the “Related links” and “Latest Comments” things on the right of this page.

Yeah it looks like a creamsicle, which are good, mmmm now i want one. Anyways, how is Fabrice Fiorese still with Maresille??? He has played for PSG, and I assumed he would stay at Lorient. Sure he isnt a bad player but i didnt see him figuring into Emon’s plans. Thing Kouang Lao is strange too, a vietnames (i think) player in france?

Sam – I really do think it was their goal but Adidas’ orange is like that this year. Look at the Houston Dynamo, it’s the same orange used with thye same jersey, only thing changing being the grey instead of the blue.
Corey – Lao was born in France and stuff, he’s french and apparently was good last season. Sadly he wasn’t called up for the U17 WC in 2005

I have to agree with Sam – the orange is kind of pinky. It would have been cooler if it were like Valencia’s orange. Or the Netherlands.
Regardless, I really like the home kits. I’ve always thought Marseille have some of the classiest kits in the league.
Good to see Beye staying in France. There were some rumors linking him with a move abroad.

What a wonderful piece of club history, thanks for enlightening us non-fanatics.
