Move Over Hugo!
By: Richard | September 25th, 2012
Possible return to the top spot?
Making the move from our beloved Ligue 1 to England is certainly in the minds and hearts of many players much to the dismay of us fans. While I think our days as a feeder club are long behind us, I’m still surprised at some of the transfer headlines I see in the league. Promising Ligue 1 players signing up for mediocrity or as Jose Anigo said it “I see 20-year-olds who haven’t even made it in France leave the country for English clubs. You see someone like Stephane Sessegnon sign for Sunderland, even though the level at Paris Saint-Germain is much better.”
I can only wonder just what Tottenham offered Lloris to leave Lyon and sit on the bench for the season. One could argue how the directions of the clubs may be different etc etc. It’s not as if Tottenham could offer Hugo Champions League football nor can they realistically offer it for next year. Brad Friedel continues to shine and has the full support of Andre Villas Boas meanwhile Lyon haven’t missed a step since Hugo’s departure. The question now has to be asked will Deschamps continue to look at Hugo as his first choice for Les Bleus? Mandanda is having an amazing season thus far allowing just a single goal, he’s fought tooth and nail to amass a string of clean sheets that have kept OM at the top.
The next match for Les Bleus is a friendly against Japan on October 14th, four days following a huge test against Spain for World Cup qualification. Mandanda is a perfect candidate to start against Japan, and the upcoming Spain match will show us if Lloris has maintained his form or not. Either way Hugo must be aware this his place as first choice keeper is under threat and being marooned on the bench certainly won’t help him. With Mandanda having a close relationship to Deschamps, we may just see Steve claim that first spot sooner rather than later.
