Monaco 2-3 Marseille, We take the third spot…

By: Magnusson | April 30th, 2008

1301045346.jpgIn what was supposed to be the game where we could actually believe this was a great season, marseille didn’t disappoint. We went at Monaco and played as if it were a home-game (this is usuamlly the case, as Monaco has no public, no offense). After a first half that was nothing more than a snoozefest save for a few highlights and Samir Nasri’s beautiful goal, the second half was easily one of the better ones we’ve seen thus far. The Monégasques showed pride and fought hrd for theirs. But ultimately, Marseille wante it more and took that game. Although it can bve said that Akalé fouled Monsoreau on the third goal while Niang passed the ball to Djibril Cissé who scored a very Un-Cissé-like goal, i.e. a very smart one. I liked that Marseille led three times but only let them come back twice. The game was nerve-racking and had we lost, we could have kissed the Champions League Goodby. Today, we’re in the passsenger’s seat and can hope to keep this spot.
It certainly won’t be easy as we will welcome Bordeaux at the Vélodrome this weekend. NOt that I want Lyon to become Champions right away, but by us winning, we make sure, Alain Perrin’s boys are a shoe-in. I don’t care, I’d rather see us third and in the Champions League than Bordeauxas champions.

Here is a highlight reel of the game.

I just want to ask, how do you feel about Steve Mandanda’s performances? One minute he makes a great save, the next he’ll make a mistake.

The past 2 games he has made mistakes that have led to a goal, what is your opinion of him, the man that brought us this far?

I have faith in him. he hadn’t made a single mistake thus far. he needed to make a few mistake to get people off his back. First of all, this is his first season at the highest level and the guy is already in the french National Team. Let’s not be too harsh with him, he’s incredibly young and incredibly talented. Now to play the Champions League and three other compettion while you only played 40 games last year must take its toll on him.
I still believ we might have the best goalkeeper France has seen since Barthez on our hands, and I’m incredibly happy about it. Seeing him make a few mistakes shows how important he was at garnering us points. How many games has he single-handedly won and how many points did he bring us?
It would be irresponsible for me to criticize him in any way.
