Monaco 0-1 Marseille, we get back on the podium
By: Magnusson | February 16th, 2009
Let’s be clear and perfectly honest, everything we have done in order to beat Bordeaux last week would have been useless had we lost against Monaco yesterday. We’ve shown a lot of qualities last week, which is probably why Eric Gerets decided to go ahead and place the exact same team on the sheet last night. Which was a fantastic idea as we dominated most of the game.
Another fantastic idea was to make sure that Baky Koné was part of the trip since the Ivorian striker was not supposed to be included in the squad before the Twente game of this Thursday. Well, thank god for him since three minutes after entering, Koné scored his seventh goal of the season and made sure we cashed in on Bordeaux draw against Grenoble and took the third sport from Toulouse, just behind Lyon and Paris.
Two better news, Marseille has once again a defense. We’ve been waiting for Julien Rodriguez so long we were starting to doubt how good he might be. Well he and Hilton are getting there, and Mandanda is once again looking like the Phenomenon he is supposed to be. Modeste M’bami who was promised not to ever play for Marseille ever again when he said this winter he wanted to move and was told “Bye Bye ” by Eric Gerets is making a very strong return for us in the last two games, taking back the spot he lost to Charles kaboré. Ziani and Cheyrou were both impressive, Valbuena still not up there but getting to a much better shape. Ben Arfa and Koné were definitely impressive when they entered the pitch, unlocking things and could even have scored more than once, both of them.
Brandao is still not the killer we were looking for but you have to credit the guy with a lot of motivation. He runs tirelessly but is pretty much useless up top as of yesterday night. Wiltord had a great first half but showed less stellar work at the beginning of the second, being replaced by Koné at the exact right time. Wiltord needs more games but he’ll be very useful once he gets into rhythm.
Here is Baky Koné’s gem of a goal:

I managed to catch this game on a terrible stream and I agree about Brandao. However, I was less impressed by M’bami and Wiltord, especially the former, who I thought was ineffective offensively. Also, when will Cana be back?

Aaron, I think Wiltord will be alright, and though he didn’t score in one of the games I watched, at least he showed some energie and attack.
I’ve been pretty disappointed with Brandao, and have been anxiously waiting for Mamadou Niang’s return. I think he and Kone have to take the lead again, and get A LOT of help from the midfield who, in my humble opinion, are not playing championship-quality football right now.
