Marseille wins back the #2 spot, loses Mamadou Niang…

By: Magnusson | December 6th, 2008

After quite an eventful week where our fan Santos Mierrasierra, arrested in madrid on some bogus hooliganism charges and sentenced to 3 and a 1/2 yars in jail this thursday (more on that soon), the Marseille-Nice derby was about to be set on shaky grounds. Robert Louis-Dreyfus, aka SpongeBOB the owner, came out in the press while giving an interview to new sports daily Le10Sport saying that if Marseille didn’t finish in the first two spots, the only people responsible would be Pape Diouf, José Anigo and Eric Gerets. That came as quite a shock since RLD is quite sick (he’s been diagnosed with Leukemia a few years back) and rarely speaks in the press about the club.
The pressure was, on! Then the Marseille prefectorate decided to forbid fan clubs taking the 45 minute train ride from Nice to come to the Vélodrome, trying to prevenyt the fan firms from fighting each other as they usually plan on doing.
Nothing of the sort happened tonight as the atmosphere in the stands was more fiocised on Santos’s incredibly hard sentence than on the rivalry.
The game was pleasant as we played without some key players (ben Arfa and Cheyrou saved as not to get suspensions against Lyon next Sunday) but still managed to dominate the game. But some MAJOR bad news came out of it. Having scored the second goal (his sixth personal this season), Mamadou Niang got injured during the second half and Eric Gerets told the journalists at the subsequent press conference that Mamadou Niang would be out for at least six weeks. Now not only is Mamadou our most important player interms of offensive threat (sorry Hatem…) but here’s a guy who scored four goals last season against Lyon and is one of those players who strives under pressure. He sustained a fracture on his right foot and will be sorely missed.

Allez L’OM!!! We we beat L’OM we will be no.1 and right now is a great time to play Lyon.

Hopefully OM will beat Atletico Madrid and gain revenge for the OM fans.

This is the first time in a long time ANY team has been able to follow Lyon this closely and if we can manage to win this one, it will be one of the best proof that the Ligue 1 is improving. Hopefully it happens, not just for our sake but for eberyone’s.

ummm, I don’t want to be a party spoiler, but if we are able to stick to Lyon, it is also due to the fact that they lost 3 times already this year, this is a first in a long time…
