Ligue 1, Matchday 1: OM vs. ReimsBy: Richard | August 15th, 2012
Marseille started off the season the right way edging out newly promoted side Reims in a 1-0 win. It was obvious that Marseille was sill fatigued from their Europa League match against Eskisehirspor as Reims controlled much of the match in it’s earliest stages. Both goalkeepers had their hands full and through their efforts the game seemed as it was destined to be a tie. I was particularly a bit frustrated with Gignac as he did have some good looks on goal but his efforts yielded nothing. Regardless, it was still refreshing seeing him cause some trouble for the defenders lets just hope he can be the player we thought we signed.
I’d be lying if this game didn’t put me into a lull of sorts. Opener aside, last seasons efforts are still fresh and my mind and I was almost expecting yet another ho-hum draw from OM. Luckily Kabore’s beautiful cross into the box somehow found Cheyrou who did his part to scream the ball into the right corner of the net. So we saw are Olympians bag the first win of the season and continue their winning ways under Elie Baup. Cheyrou Reflecting on his game winning goal: “It’s a long time since we started the season with a win, we all stuck together and this will be good for our confidence, there’s a lot more to come from the team.” In retrospect this should have been Reims game to win. They were the faster side no doubt making Mandanda work his tail off. In the we weathered the storm but this opener still shows how long we still need to come as a squad. Baup still has a long way to go in terms of solidifying his ideology and style of play but so far so good.
