Gerets’ killer? Brandao

By: Magnusson | January 13th, 2009

Out of the long list of strikers we could have bought, Gerets, Anigo and Diouf decided on brandao after a whole week of negociations with Henrik Larsson. Once the swede decided he was too old for our challenge, Brandao, who made it known through his agent that he was going to bounce to brazilian side Palmeiras, came to better sentiments and expressed his desire to come play for us.
Evanílson Lemos da Silva aka Brandao, will come as the only striker of our mercato, unless Didier Drogba decides to come after all.
This very tall player will have to become what mamadou Samassa never could have been (not Samassa’s fault, the guy was not playing at Le Mans, how could he have cut it with us?) bringing height and weight to our offense. Brandao has been playing with the Ukrainian side of Shakhtar Donetsk for the last six season and scored 60 goals in 127 games with them. He does foit the profile Eric gerets was looking for, a player who fights from start to beginning, a box to box striker who will help Niang, Koné and Ben Arfa focus on the getting the ball there and he will be polarizing attntion.
The tranfer will set us back 6 million euros and could very well be a bargain if he turns out to be as good as we remember him from the previous Champions league campaigns.
Here are the brazilian’s statistics for the last few seasons.
2002-03 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 18 games, 4 goals
2003-04 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 18 games, 8 goals
2004-05 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 18 games, 12 goals (CL : 5 m, 2 g)
2005-06 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 18 games, 15 goals (CL : 1 m)
2006-07 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 20 games, 9 goals (CL : 6 m)
2007-08 : Shakhtar Donetsk – 25 games, 12 goals(CL : 8m, 3b)
2008-09 : Shakhtar Donetsk (CL: 7 , 2 b)

I’m not to optimistic about this purchase but well see, Brazilians can adapt anywhere.

There was word that Gerets’ first choice was Galatasaray’s Umit Karan, but the captain didn’t want to leave. So they went onto their second choice Larsson, who couldn’t make up his mind either.

Brandao will be a good signing for Marseille. Gerets knew how to buy economically and productively.

Umit Karan would have been great. That being said, I’m happy that SOMETHING has been done to try to remedy the “pieces-are-missing” situation. Brandao may or may not be the solution but at least he offers us a healthy attaquant.

Defense needs to play consistently, and Niang needs to come back at full strength as soon as possible if we’re going to make a run to win Ligue 1.

    Allez l’OM!!! :)

I hope this works out and I hope we don’t decimate our defence to pay for Brandao. It seems Givet has gone to Blackburn, which makes no difference, but PLEASE don’t let Taiwo go to Man City.

But almost he comes to Palmeiras.

I hope that he can score a lot of goals for Marseille.

Brandao is a has been. Worst thing Marseille could do. He’s a good scorer in Ukraine, not in the ultra competitive football of France.
