Franck Ribery, French Player of the Year…
By: Magnusson | December 16th, 2007
Two weeks after the Ballon d’Or that went to Kakà, France Football gives a trophy to the French Player of the Year. And after many years of Thierry Henry domination(5 trophies and four in a row from ‘03 to ‘06), this year it rightfully went to Franck Ribery for his outstanding performances for Marseille than for Bayern Munich as well as with the French National team. Franck becomes one of the youngest laureates at 24 (only Marius Trésor and Michel Platini got it when they were younger). Other youngsters are included in the list. Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema are both in the Top ten and you see that Hatem Benarfa’s and Steve Mandanda’s season beginnings have been remarked and they have been included as well. Fot the first time in years, Patrick Vieira has not been included because of injury and you can see how much clout a player like Henry has since he comes at N°2 and hasn’t even had a complete season. But his Platini record breaking is still in all minds.
The jury is composed of past winners and some french journalists, each of them giving five names with the same rating system than in the Ballon d’Or race.

Benzema needs to have a great Euro. Whichever player has the better compettion in Switzerland will win it. It will be that simple. Unless of course Lyon wins the cl

Of course Lyon will win the CL, Lyon women will win the European’s women’s cup, and France will win Euro 2008!
I’m surprised that Benzema is so high on the list. He even beat out Malouda and Abidal. For a second I couldn’t understand why Juninho wasn’t on that list but Pires was, and then I remembered that it’s French player of the year, not France’s player of the year.
Say, what exactly constitutes a year? Because Sidney Govou is on that list. Sid’s been great since the start of the season but absolute crap last season.

They mean civil year. But basically, if you have a good season start, you’re sure to figure on it. Benzema was incredible this season while both Malouda and Abidal are having so-so seasons with their new clubs. And Sidney Govou has never been this good. He could be France’s best player next year.
