Cédric Carasso out six months, Steve Mandanda puts the gloves ON….
By: Magnusson | August 22nd, 2007
After Grégory Coupet, it is Cédric Carasso’s turn to be injured for a very long time. During a normal impulsion during training this morning, Carasso ruptured his Achilles tendon, which need at least a six month recovery including two months of healing and four additionnal to get him back into shape. He’ll get surgery friday afternoon or monday morning. I sincerely hope he gets well as soon as possible. We’ll need him in the quarter finals of the Champions League!
See this is the worst kind of injuries. It happenend to the best player we’ve had this season yet. Carasso started being consistent again and that was awesome. He was back to being on the verge of a national team spot pretendant. So this is even sadder news for us. But at least Marseille had the good idea of recruiting a second number 1 in Steve Mandanda who definitly gets to play before even he hoped to. He was great with Le Havre these past few years so let’s hope the pressure in Marseille and the Champons League doesn’t fuck with his moral. Either way, we’ll still have Sébastien Hamel who is a top keeper (well, let’s say he’s been an adequate replacement before).

I think it’s a good new. Carasso is probably among the worst goalkeeper in L1 i ve ever seen. Take three goals for him it is not a problem. He has a consistent unability to catch the ball, but even to jump. His performances in UEFA cup, allowed the prematured elimination of Marseille by unknown club. He is the kind of player for who you want to pay your adversories to see him play with them.

@Thierry: What you say is true exactly half the time. Who can forget the match against Bayern in the Dubai Cup? But then he turns around and produces an unbelievable game against Lyon in the Coupe de France… not consistent, but when he’s on, he’s ON.

@Thierry: Are you kidding me? Carasso as one of the worst? I guess you must not watch much Ligue 1. Granted he’s very inconsistent but he’s definitly in the top 5 of the league talentwise.

I have to partially agree with Thierry…Personally speaking, I’ve never though Carasso good enough for the ambitious team that Diouf is trying to build. With all the other players coming in, it wouldn’t have hurt if Marseille had tried to lure in a better gk.
I think there are several better gks in L1 before him (Coupet, Richert, Janot, Landreau, Pele, Lloris, Rame, and perhaps even Pouplin. Itandje and Riou deserve a mention too).
But that isn’t a reflection of Carasso’s talent - on the days he decides to turn it on, he can literally carry Marseille on his back. But the mark of a good gk is someone who performs at least 90% of the time, not just 50%. His inconsistency means vulnerability, and for a team that is challenging for the title and progression in the CL, inconsistency is not an option. If players don’t have 100% confidence in their gk, that’s a problem.
(not that I should be talking at the moment - Vercoutre blows hot and cold all the time). It is so annoying.

huge blow for OM is this - effectively out for the season really because there wont be too many games left. Mandanda is a good replacement and deserves a chance at the top level - will be interesting to see how he performs

They said early january for his comeback. Let’s just hope he heals fast and doesnt get fat again (that’s not a joke, Carasso has always been battling his weight, even going through a crazy diet that made him lose 40 pounds in two months).

The top of the OM blog homepage says “Olympique Marseilles French Football Blog.” It should be “Olympique de Marseille.”
