A Long week.
By: Magnusson | July 11th, 2009This week as long. A funeral, countless rumors, new signings and our first game of the season to finish it all off.
The Show had to go on
First off Marseille quietly bid farewell to Karim Ziani who decided very early on that he needed to leave Marseille even though he had an incredible second season. The diminutive Algerian signed with German Champions Wolfsburg last Sunday and left Evian Monday morning. Selling for €7 million, it seems like a fair deal but to think that two seasons ago, we were bullied into buying him for eight. But Ziani was good enough this season for us to let him go without it bothering Didier Deschamps too much. It is no secret that the new manager wants our players in the midfield to be a little more powerful, which is why he’s pursuing players like Lucho and Stephane M’bia.
That brings us to the Lorik Cana case. Didier Deschamps never liked him, that’s no secret. When he arrived, he made it clear that three players were his priority, Steve Mandanda, Taye Taiwo and Mamadou Niang. After negotiating with those three, the Ex-France Captain realized how important Cana had become to the fans and the locker room and started backpedalling, saying to him it was evident that Cana would be staying and that he didn’t feel the need to reinforce that opinion. Sure Didier! Now Cana will leave if an offer strong enough comes our way. The player doesn’t feel appreciate and knows he’ll only be fourth choice in the midfield after Cheyrou, Lucho and M’bia if he comes (more on that later). Lorik Cana has been nothing short of exemplary under Fernandez, Emon and Gerets. So Deschamps letting him go is like him letting go of Valbuena, he’s trying to get rid of the players Gerets was using the most. It’s petty but in an atmosphere where the new President’ only hope is that he doesn’t find his office burned down in the morning, Deschamps is pretty much allowed to do as he pleases, and that wouldnt have happened under Diouf.
Anyway, I’m going to say it here once and for all, no matter how great M’bia is, I watched enough Rennes games and personally met the guy to know that he’s playing for M’bia and that’s it. He doesn’t give a shit about where he plays as long as he’s getting paid. That’s the mercenary mentality I don’t like and that’s why I love Lorik Cana, who was always a guarantee in our lineup. I hope I’m wrong on his one but I think we’re just messing up trying to fix something that’s not broke just yet.
I would also like to give credit to Jose Anigo. We all know how close he grew to like Pape Diouf (after an initial period where the two didn’t trust each other) and even linked his future to his President’s. And after hesitating a long time, it took all of Diouf’s clout to convince the Minot to stay at Marseille. And as much as people love to bash on him, he stayed quiet and will work withg Deschamps, a man he loathes. The truth is that for many people in Marseille, and eve me, Deschamps has been flirting way too close with a period of our history that brought us trophies but also hurt the club so bad I’d rather it never happened (okay, not really but you get my point). Anigo said before Deschamps came in that some people soiled the club and left them (the real Marseillais) the pieces to fix while reaping the benefits of the glorious trophy won in 1993. Anyway, Anigo is the club now. No if’s but’s and maybe’s. Anigo has managed to buy impressive players as he was given a little more leeway. We now know that they started talking with Lucho last season and talked when Argentina came in Marseille to play opposite France in February. So much for the Deschamps juice theory.
Anyways, Anigo managed to sell at a great price players that were not wanted in Marseille anymore, Djibril Cissé (€8.5 million to Galatasaray), Ronald Zubar (€4 million to Wolverhampton), Karim Ziani (7.5 to Wolfsburg), Gaël Givet (€4 million to Blackburn), without taking into account a million from both Bayern Munich and Arsenal who both qualified for the next Champions League. And Samassa will be sold to either Grenoble or Montpellier by the beginning of the season. Add that to the €46 million we received in TV rights, Marseille is in great economical shape, and Anigo is making a hell of a lot of smart moves for someone supposed to be incompetent.
And their ambitions have not gone unnoticed as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the man Karim Benzema is replacing in Madrid stopped by on Thursday to negotiate with our staff for an eventual move to Marseille when everyone had him already signing with Stuttgart. And let’s be clear, this is NOT a rumor, it’s and ACTUAL Information. Huntelaar was in Marseille. Now nothing has filtered from the meetings but we know he went to see the Commanderie training grounds (empty but still) and the stadium. Even if I don’t see Huntelaar succeeding in France, It would be an interesting signing.

wow– Cana must really be unhappy to switch from a Champions League team to a team that was almost relegated last season. Not good!

The Cana thing is awful. Can’t see who it benefited other than Sunderland. Magnusson: Do you write for Goal.com?

Is it true, we’ve signed both Fernando Morientes AND Fabrice Abriel?

We have also signed Heinze from Madrid…Not bad…

Heinze is signed! It’s just a formality at this point. I like the team, but it made more sense to keep Cana and NOT sign M’bia. That’s the only questionable move from this off-season. Having seen all the pre-season games, I’m not very confident, but time will tell and I think things will come together.

Lucho’s banged-up now… clavicle fracture? … Any specifics on the injury? He’ll be back in a few weeks, hopefully?

I can’t believe it is already the start of the season this weekend! I hope they start off well! The game is on Setanta (which is still available for Americans)– so I will be watching!

Okay, so currently Setanta is playing a PSG game, even though the schedule says that are suppose to play OM-Grenoble. I’m really disappointed that Hatem is not in the starting 11, but it is understandable. For some reason his performances as a sub have been much stronger than as a starter. And, this way he doesn’t get too comfortable after a few games. In the 7/31 issue of France Football, he was interviewed about his disappointing first season (especially since he started off strongly). He said that maybe he felt too comfortable early, like he had proved himself. Making him work to become a starter might be a good way to sustain his motivation. Obviously these point to his lack of game mentality, but I have faith. At least he recognizes it.

Wow, Sarah.
Quite sage.
I had read that article as well, but hadn’t put together that connection. It’s quite true that HBA isn’t quite in the same place mentally as some other players his age (Benzema, Loïc Rémy, even Elliot Grandin seems more mature, though not technically as skilled as HBA). I think that fighting for a spot — and having the kind of competition he has can only be good for him!
Anyone else notice how much more aggressively he plays under DD?Posted from

Richard: I agree that he is playing more aggressively under DD. I think it may be because he has less defensive responsibilities (there seems to be more confidence in the defense this year in general).
Also, I thought his quotes to this press about not panicking when he found out he wasn’t in the starting 11, recognizing that he hadn’t given enough to be in the first team and that the season was long (so therefore there would be a lot of opportunities in the future) were really mature. Usually when he is not in the starting 11, he doesn’t talk to the press (unless he scored a goal or had an extraordinary sub performance). I think it is a (small) improvement– the fact that he can talk to the press about his misgivings so close to the event and without had a good game.

God this match is nerve wracking.

The end was nerve racking, I will admit. Even though Brandao got the goal– I was slightly let down by his finishing…Hatem made several good passes to him and he couldn’t put any of them in the back of the box…Niang was constantly dangerous though!

The first half we played really strong.. lots of attack and control from the midfield and forwards. Great goal by Brandao on that corner, and Mamadou Niang played really strong. I thought Cheyrou was going to score on that one.
Yes, the end was a bit weaker. I was scared Lille was going to equalize right at the end there. Whew. A few questionable defensive plays. Thank goodness for Mandanda being really really sharp.
All in all, happy to have the 3 points, but I think we could have had a few more goals..

Justin C: Are you talking about Cheyrou’s volley attempt? The build up to that was so good– I thought he was going to score as well…

Sarah, yeah that was what i was referring to… It was a beautifully set up shot. I’m sure we’ll see more of that to come, and some goals to go along with it

Our CL league group will be tough– both Real Madrid and AC Milan!! Well, they players did say they wanted to play against the big teams in interviews…

Well, AC Milan were awful today. Maybe Marseille do stand a chance.

Thomas, i think they stand a good chance. Anything can happen. Although RM looks strong they could choke too. It will feel so good to beat AC Milan though..

how about some more frequent updates?

Unlucky against Milan in the CL – a game that Marseille should have taken. Too many shots just not hitting the target and Pippo being super sneaky was able to slot a brace. Allez L’OM!!

Any thoughts on DD comments on players who are observing Ramadan? He has stated he has intentionally not played HBA because he is physically not as strong since he cannot eat and drink as the other players do….

boy that was rough… we should have won that match. I really hate Milan and that diving gattuso acting like he got shot by a sniper.

That felt a lot like last year’s group stage games in the Champions League. Bossing the game, creating most of the chances, and losing.

We love you though Justin. Unlucky kids
