“A jamais les premiers…
By: Magnusson | July 31st, 2007Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to re-introduce myself, my name is Massaër, MA to the double S, A…. I believe in Marseille since childhood and I guess even back then you could have called me Marseille’s #1 fan (enough with the Jay-Z references). I’m taking over the vacant position of the Marseille Offside. It was a long process but it finally happened. No offense to anybody, but it seemed criminal that my childhood team and the most popular of all french clubs would be left Offside-less. Consider this anomaly corrected.
I was born in paris, grew up in Sénégal, and came back to Paris to go to college. I carry about three passports everywhere I go (senegalese, french and of course my “made in Marseille” Picsou magazine 1993 iD).
Why do I support Marseille? L’OM is the first french club to win the only European competition that counts (don’t even get me strarted on the team that won a cup that doesn’t exist anymore beating an Austrian team of all opponents!), the UEFA Champions League. But my fascination with this team started way before that and way before Bari. I was a fan since the Amoros, Cantona, Waddle, Enzo francescoli, Bruno Germain, JPP, and Carlos Mozer era.
Here are my credentials and they give me the right to have absolute ideas and I’ll always be right, even when I’m wrong. Yes people, I got swagger and skills when it comes to this!!! and if my humongrous ego is to be believed, no one can do this better.
On a more serious tip though, I hope I’ll be up to the task and I’ll make sure this blog doesn’t disappoint the hardcore fans nor alienate the others. Before we get this thing started, I’d like to thank my half-tunisian, half-american brethren and now colleague Rami for putting me up to the World Cup Blog and then to the Offside last summer, Inara for convincing me to make this Marseille blog happen and Bob for welcoming me to the team…
And by the way, if Rami has definitly reached Ronaldinho-level skills with his keyboard, I hope I won’t be remembered for my Abel Xavier qualities once everything is said and done (the funny/ridiculous haircut and the ability to fake his way through a somewhat highly respectable career).
Peace…

“I’ll always be right, even when I’m wrong.”
All this and managing to channel Titi as well. Quite a feat!
Welcome from LA Galaxy Offside and the France page at World Cup Blog. Good luck with this Ribery-less season.

I took French in middle school, but I’m not even going to try to embarrass myself by posting a welcome comment in French, so I’ll keep my welcome notice in English. WELCOME TO THE OFFSIDE! And happy blogging.

Merci Sam c’est un plaisir d’etre ici.
Laurie – Thank you very much but i’m not that worried that Ribery’s not here anymore. I do believe we’re stronger. And I hope you were not offended by the Abel Xavier joke there.
Aj – Thanks for the warm welcome
Et oui Julien, encore un français

Not offended, (very little offends me, aside from Gigi Buffon) but I do adore Abel — to the point that I’m on the verge of sending my husband the link to buy me an Xavier Galaxy jersey. (Because EVERYBODY will have a Beckham jersey. Abel is the in-joke for the in-crowd.) And this is true even though he sucked last night.

Welcome! It’s good to finally have a Marseille blog, as things will get interesting when L1 and the CL heat up. I too don’t think Ribery will be much of a factor as he’s one of those players that don’t play consistently well, and there were large periods of last year where he was either out injured or playing like crap. I think Ziani will offer more reliability (good buy, btw!). It’ll also be interesting to see the Rodriguez-Givet pairing at work, and it’s good that Cana has some support at midfield. Last year OM’s midfield was kind of leaky.
Anyway, though I obviously want Lyon to win as always, I’m looking forward to some genuine competition, and I hope that we have a real title race. It’s up to our clubs to prove that L1 isn’t a crappy league.

Marseille’s midfield will be devoid of leakiness the moment Emon stops playing M’Bami.

Exactly! For some reason I was much more reassured every time Salomon Olemebé was playing. Modeste is just a dillettante. He’s a world class player three times a year and Casper the Ghost the rest of the time. Consistency is the main thing he has to work on, that and more colorful hairstyles.
