Will Pape Diouf be our president next season?

By: Magnusson | June 12th, 2009

We all know how Marseille is a very popular club and how jealous of Pape Diouf a lot of people are and have become. His position is the hardest one in France without question but a lot of people would want that prestige for themselves. The president has been criticized internally for months now if not years by a few people at the club, namely Vincent Labrune, who has been gunning for his spot ever since he got Robert Louis-Dreyfus‘ ears and is much closer to the magnate than Diouf is.

This wednesday night, Pape Diouf skipped one of the Directory’s meetings in Paris to take care of the club in Marseille. This created a new polemic, as it was believed that a few members of that directory would be criticizing him for the Ribery incident and his handling of the whole Gerets situation.

Fist of all, with the Ribery situation, an internet website revealed earlier this month that Pape Diouf gave Franck Ribery a 500.000 euros incentive for him to go to the clash with his then employers of Galatasaray and make possible his arrival at Marseille. This alledgedly happened and Ribery allegedly confessed to it in a mailing kept by hi ancient agent, Bruno Heiderscheid.

If we remember correctly, Ribery came back to Marseille after six months in Galatasaray from Metz on reasons that he had never been paid and that there were threats made against him there and a few other things.

Now aside from that affair that never really was proven nor followed, it seems the owner wasn’t pleased with the fact that Erik Gerets left and Labrune was about to make him explain himself. If we remember correctly, the whole Gerets situation is one that was caused by bruised egos and misunderstandings. Gerets himself told since that he was sorry he reacted so quickly.

But let’s be clear, it is Robert Louis-Dreyfus‘ declarations in December in L’Equipe and Le10sport that were the source of it all. When Robert Louis-Dreyfus says “They better win or they’ll all be fired!” (or something tasteful in the lines of that), he creates a problem where there isn’t one. Pape Diouf then believes the owner (who is sick and doesn’t come to Marseille often) doesn’t want Gerets anymore. He then takes it upon himself to go see Spongebob and asks him the permission to re-sign Gerets. Permission granted but by that time, it was already too late. Diouf then immediatly signed Deschamps but everyone agrees Gerets was the most natural fit.

Anyways, this Vincent Labrune chracter wants Diouf‘’s job but as everyone in Marseille puts it, he’ll have to have the b***s to come and sit where Pape Diouf is sitting. With every single problem that comes at you sideways in this city, let’s not forget that you can’t be presiding from Paris and that’s in Marseille that things are and not in the Capitol’s restaurants. Now Labrune will have to come out and talk. Enough with the cowardice.

My personal poition is clear, Pape Diouf i wihout a doubt the best president of the Louis-Dreyfus era and this would be the WORST (and I can’t stress that enough) mistake ever made by this club if the owner let’s himself influenced enough and let’s him go. Pape Diouf is the best President of a football club that isn’t Jean-Michel Aulas (but he’s also an owner) and Marseille is headed to its fourth straight Champion League campaign.

We’ll see how this unfolds in the future but we, here at the Marseille offside, stand 100% behind Pape Diouf, Jose Anigo and Didier Deschamps.

I think the problem is frustration on the part of RLD at not actually winning the league which has led to hair trigger reactions at times. Managers/ players everyone coming and going at times without being given a real chance to prove their worth.

I’d agree that we are in our most stable period since the glory days of the late 80’s early 90’s but this still might not be enough for some in the power positions of the club without any silverware to show. I’d also agree firing Pape would be a mistake at this point but he has actually lasted longer than I might have expected in some ways.

I totally agree, and I’ll also say that Diouf won’t willingly leave the presidency.

I am in total support of Pape Diouf & Deschamps. I kind of don’t like Anigo because of his bad recruiting. I hope Deschamps has a lot of say in transfers.

    Thanks for the support guys.

@Harris – The truth is RLD has shown his frustration at the worst possible moment. I think for someone like him, who’s not know for his eloquence nor his willingness to let himself be interviewed, it showed an incredible lack of jusdgement. The man invested much more money than ayone else ever has in the club. But he’s sick (as in really phisically ill), he doesn’t come see games anymore and has created a climate that makes it impossible for Pape Diouf to run the show.
As you have said, he might be frustrated but let’s be clear, if it wasn’t for Pape Diouf, he would be in jail. His lack of judgement in choosing the people he surrounds himself with has been the main cause of his legal problems. Plus Diouf had the most difficulties as he arrived in 2005 and took the job after Drogba left, after that Mecato. So he was the first one to NOT get money from RLD to recruit and look what we have achieved, third consecutive Champions league campaign. I say congrats.
Pape Diouf will not leave, that’s not his character but let’s not forget he was the most powerful agent in France period so he’s not hurting for money and that’s the principle. Diouf needs to go there (in Paris) and explain himself to the people who want his job. And make sure they come to Marsille. I’m pretty sure they’ll get calls from Yves Marchand or Christophe Bouchet whose respective wives had nervous breakdowns. They’ll understand this is not a job any man can take on, no matter how ambitious they might be.

Totally agree. This is a blatant case of the media taking a non-story, getting people thinking and then turning it into a possibility. It would be a terrible thing for l’OM if he was to go.

My God. This team is starting to be ripped apart and we didn’t even win Le Championnat. RLD must go. PD must stay, and DD needs reigning in. If that doesn’t happen, we’re right back to when Emon took over. I’m not optimistic, I think we’re back to square one. Gerets was the best thing that happened to l’OM since 93. Merde.

Patience. That’s what Marseille need. They closer than ever to winning Ligue 1. They can’t just give it away now. Last 3 seasons have been the consistent best for Marseille since 1993. Before Lyon won their first title they came close about 2-4 times themselves. Missing out on these titles is an experience. Players with this experience won’t repeat the mistake again. It is also important to keep players that form core of the team. Letting any of Mandanda, Taiwo, Cana, Niang, Cheyrou, would be a big loss.

This team is always experiencing crazy situations at the worst possible time. We don’t need this right now! Magnusson, I read on the comments in “LaProvence” that some people feel Pape’s support is coming from the supporters’ clubs because he lets them sell tickets for the club. Many of them don’t want to lose these “abonnements” so they are ardent supporters of Pape. Can you comment on that? How true is it?

Well let’s be real, that system of letting the fan clubs sell the tickets got “officialized” by Pape Diouf when he arrived to avoid two things. First he responsibilized fan clubs and holds them accountable when there are problems. This helps when it comes to disciplining our fans either at home or away. And second, that creates an environment a lot less conflictual than when he arrived and supporter groups were still holding each others at gun point for petty reasons.
Second, he didn’t invent anything, he just pt it in th spotlight to make everyone understood the thought process. Because when you put people like Lionel Tonini in charge, you at least know who you’re dealing with on a daily basis and are much more likely to get a hold of the fans and control them. Marseille is very special that way and Diouf and Anigo’s way of dealing with fans is the right one. You treat them as partners and you don’t have problems anymore. All they want is to feel included. Give them the opportunity to sell their t-shirts in front of the stadium, grant them limited access to the stadium before games (this allows for more controls and less fines for the club in terms of pyrotechnics and drug dealing as i other stadiums) and you don’t make it a lawless place.
I mean all he has done is just follow examples of socio clubs to allow him some time to breathe and work at more important things.
Pape Diouf’s support doesn’t just come from Supporter clubs. Everyone from Manuel Amoros, to Erik Gerets to Louis Acariès to actual and past players are pouring in because they all love the club. I mean only people with “agendas” can honestly say they want this team to leave.
Robert Louis-Dreyfus has leukemia, that’s a fact. The man is very sick and doesn’t have time for this, which is why all these men are positionning themselves as messiahs to get the most prestigious of posts (this was true for Glaoui, De la Brosse and now Labrune). They all want the job because it’s the sexiest in his empire. But it’s the sexiest NOW. Four years ago, that meant weekly appointments with DNCG for budgetary reasons and having to actually work with restrains. Look how Lens will hve to do it this season.
